Expand homeless shelter capacity for transgender New Yorkers
Transgender New Yorkers are statistically more likely to experience homelessness in their life due to discrimination. Providing shelter specifically tailored for the needs of transgender individuals is crucial to ensuring their well-being. Homeless shelter facilities for transgender New Yorkers must be expanded.
Mental health resources designed for LGBTQIA+ identity
Members of the LGBTQIA+ community face unique needs for their mental health that are intrinsically related to identity. There are not enough options for mental health services tailored to LGBTQIA+ individuals in New York City, even though members of the community are more likely to suffer from severe mental health issues. New York must dedicate more funding to serving the LGBTQIA+’s mental health needs.
Repeal of the “Walking While Trans Law”
The Loitering for the Purpose of Prostitution of 1976, otherwise known as the “Walking While Trans Law”, intended as a quality-of-life measure is notoriously vague. This law has been used in a discriminatory manner against transgender, non-binary, Black, and brown New Yorkers to criminalize their appearance. I will sign legislation that acts to repeal the Walking While Trans Law
Expanded funding for LGBTQIA+ history curricula
New York has made strides in teaching LGBTQIA+ history, from Marsha P. Johnson to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. These curricula teach young students of the LGBTQIA’s accomplishments and contributions to society. I pledge to expand funding for these curricula in New York City schools.
