Enact legislation giving broader control of DOE matters to school staff
Mayor DeBlasio mishandled a safe DOE school reopening, leaving students, families, and staff completely out of the decision-making process. We cannot afford to play political games with students’ safety and education. DOE staff need to have enhanced authority to make decisions by taking away complete decision-making powers from the Mayor’s administration and devolving those powers to DOE staff.
Expansion of Gifted and Specialized programs
Gifted and specialized programs help the brightest of students reach their full potential. I unequivocally reject the Mayor’s move to discontinue gifted and specialized programs. Not only should these programs be retained but expanded so that students who need tutors or test prep are eligible for financial assistance. This way New York students can have a gifted and specialized program that is equitable to all.
Retaining the SHSAT
The Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) is an accurate determinant of performance for specialized programs and it should be maintained. Students who need expanded access to test prep resources should be eligible for grants to ensure that the system is equitable.
